DifficultyhardThis longer upper-district continuation inherits the not-for-beginners Kyles-to-Erbie section and adds another campground-to-campground half day below Erbie. Swift current, rough-road logistics, wood, and cold-water swims keep it behind the whitewater route type.
PermitsNone notedNo route-specific private paddling permit is known for a normal Buffalo National River day trip. Follow NPS river rules, carry required PFDs, obey access and parking signs, and check park alerts, weather, and river level before launching.
CampingOptions nearbyKyle's Landing and Ozark are both formal NPS campgrounds, so this continuation works well as a campground-to-campground Buffalo day if the group wants overnight support at either end instead of forcing a same-morning shuttle.
SeasonFeb-DecNPS says upper Buffalo paddling is rainfall dependent and usually best in spring and early summer when recent water feeds the corridor. Treat this as a stable-or-falling-gauge trip rather than a dependable summer float.

Use this section once the route looks viable and you need to turn it into an actual trip plan.

Access, shuttle, and map

Launch at Kyle's Landing and take out at Ozark for a longer upper Buffalo continuation through the Erbie corridor. Use the Pruitt USGS gauge as the nearest downstream low-water check, and skip the route when the river is rising fast, very low, or above the NPS unsafe level.

Access caveats and watch for

Access caveats

  • Kyle's Landing is a remote upper-district access reached by rough park road. NPS recommends high clearance and four-wheel drive for Kyle's Landing Road.
  • Ozark is a developed campground access, but the sandy beach and parking rhythm can shift with water, gravel movement, and summer crowding.
  • NPS says no road follows the river, access roads may be unpaved or rocky, and GPS can be unreliable in the park. Carry a real map and do not assume cell service.
  • This route uses the Pruitt gauge as a downstream corridor check with minimum-only scoring. It is not a full ideal-range recommendation.

Watch for

  • Swift current, sharp bends, occasional obstacles, strainers, sweepers, fresh flood wood, and cold-water swims.
  • Low water below about 100 cfs at Pruitt, when the Float Guide marks Pruitt very low and dragging or shallow braid-finding become likely.
  • High water above the NPS 2,000 cfs Pruitt unsafe level; do not treat flood or rising water as suitable private-boater conditions.
  • Upper-district remoteness, rough-road shuttle delays, limited or no cell service, and a longer day than the shorter Kyles or Erbie splits.

Today's data confidence is checking

Data confidence mostly comes down to three things: how direct the gauge is, how clear the range is, and how fresh the data is.
