DifficultyhardThe miles stack up into a very long whitewater-ish moving-water day with repeated riffles, bluff bends, remote rescue exposure, and rough-road shuttle friction. Treat this as an advanced planning route, not a casual scenic float.
PermitsNone notedNo route-specific private paddling permit is known for a normal Buffalo National River day trip. Follow NPS river rules, carry required PFDs, obey access and parking signs, and check park alerts, weather, and river level before launching.
CampingOptions nearbyPonca, Steel Creek, Kyle's Landing, Erbie, and Ozark still anchor this corridor with legal NPS camping support, so this route is best staged around developed campground infrastructure rather than private-bank improvisation.
SeasonFeb-NovNPS still says upper-district Buffalo paddling is extremely dependent on rainfall and often works best in spring or early summer, but the Pruitt gauge can still show runnable windows after storms outside that core season.

Use this section once the route looks viable and you need to turn it into an actual trip plan.

Access, shuttle, and map

Launch at Ponca and take out at Pruitt for a full upper Buffalo continuation through Steel Creek, Kyle's Landing, Erbie, and Ozark. Use the direct Pruitt gauge as the downstream low-water check, and skip the route when the river is rising fast, very low, or above the NPS unsafe level.

Peltier Lake to Long Lake is the full route. Shorter access pairs are useful when wind, time, or group energy changes the plan.

Start

Put-in

Ponca access / Buffalo River at Ponca gauge corridorOpen map

Ponca is a busy upper-district access and the gauge sits in the launch corridor. Make a visual low-water and wood check before committing.

Finish

Take-out

Pruitt Landing / Highway 7 accessOpen map

Pruitt is the signed Highway 7 finish, but NPS says to continue about half a mile past the bridge to the landing on river left. Do not mistake the bridge area for the take-out.

Access caveats and watch for

Access caveats

  • Ponca is a busy upper-district access and the gauge sits in the launch corridor. Make a visual low-water and wood check before committing.
  • Pruitt is the signed Highway 7 finish, but NPS says to continue about half a mile past the bridge to the landing on river left. Do not mistake the bridge area for the take-out.
  • NPS says no road follows the river, access roads may be unpaved or rocky, and GPS can be unreliable in the park. Carry a real map and do not assume cell service.
  • This route uses the direct Pruitt gauge with minimum-only scoring. It is not a full ideal-range recommendation.

Watch for

  • Swift Class I-II current, wave trains, side channels, sharp bends, bluff eddies, fresh flood wood, and cold-water swims.
  • Low water below about 100 cfs at Pruitt, when the Float Guide marks the lower corridor very low and the long mileage compounds dragging and slow route pace.
  • High water above the NPS 2,000 cfs Pruitt unsafe level; do not treat flood or rising water as suitable private-boater conditions.
  • Long day fatigue, rough-road shuttle delays, limited or no cell service, remote rescue exposure, and late-day darkness if the launch is delayed.

Today's data confidence is checking

Data confidence mostly comes down to three things: how direct the gauge is, how clear the range is, and how fresh the data is.

What to know before you go

These notes cover the access details, route quirks, and source caveats most likely to matter once you get there.

  • Official route shapePonca to Pruitt, 23.9 miles

The current NPS Buffalo River mileage chart still lists Ponca to Pruitt as 23.9 river miles and preserves the intermediate access ladder of Steel Creek, Kyle's Landing, Erbie, and Ozark.

    Source

  • Upper-district condition framingRainfall dependent upper-district route

The current NPS upper-district paddling page still says paddling conditions in the upper district are extremely dependent on rainfall and tells visitors to check gauges and current conditions before launching.

    Source

  • Direct gauge readingUSGS 07055680 at 35.8 cfs / 3.21 ft

USGS Water Services returned direct Pruitt values of 35.8 cfs at 2026-07-16 09:00 CDT and 3.21 ft at 2026-07-16 09:15 CDT, which is below the conservative 100 cfs floor and supports explicit too-low / scraping-likely framing in this run.

    Source

  • Threshold supportPruitt minimum-only 100 cfs floor; 2,000 cfs unsafe high caveat

The current NPS-linked Buffalo Float Guide still marks Pruitt very low below 100 cfs and the NPS paddling guidance still says levels above 2,000 cfs at Pruitt / Highway 7 are unsafe.

    Source

  • Public endpointsPonca access and Pruitt Landing / Highway 7 access

Current NPS Buffalo access pages and corridor guidance still treat Ponca as an upper-district launch and Pruitt Landing as the signed Highway 7 take-out below the bridge area.

    Source

  • Camping supportSteel Creek, Kyle's Landing, Erbie, and Ozark campground corridor

Current NPS campground pages still confirm legal overnight support at the major intermediate campgrounds, which keeps the route on developed public infrastructure instead of implying private-bank camping.
