  American Whitewater rates the reach Class IV-V and describes nearly continuous rapids, a major falls portage, a dangerous river-wide fence, and mobile wood. Scout the entire corridor from the road where possible and never assume a fence or wire is visible from upstream. American Whitewater's live correlation for the Potlatch River below Little Potlatch Creek near Spalding is 1,000-2,600 cfs. This is a downstream proxy for Big Bear Creek; use it as a broad planning cue only and override it with a local visual inspection. American Whitewater reports Idaho Fish and Game steelhead weirs on Big Bear and Little Bear, typically February-June, including a Big Bear weir below the Little Bear Ridge Road bridge.
