  American Whitewater describes regular lava-rock ledges, AOK Falls, Hydrant, Tuber Falls, bridge hazards, and Class III-IV water. Scout every ledge and carry a rescue plan suited to a committing creek-style run. Use 400-700 cfs as the conservative preferred planning window. At 700-900 cfs the run becomes substantially tougher, and above 1,000 cfs holes can be extremely sticky with severe swim and pinning consequences. The American Whitewater endpoint pair includes a Lava-area put-in and an unnamed public park take-out. Confirm current city/park permission, bank access, private-property boundaries, and any diversion or bridge closures before staging. The Portneuf Watershed Partnership places its Topaz station on the downstream side of the Portneuf Marsh Valley Canal diversion, about 1.5 miles below the USGS Topaz gauge. Treat the PVC area as a diversion hazard and monitoring landmark, not as proof of a legal boat landing; do not approach the structure.
