Androscoggin River paddle planning

What to verify before you commit.

Water levels

USGS 01054500 measures water at Rumford. It does not establish suitable water levels for every Androscoggin trip. These Maine trips have no daily score; check local conditions, dam portages and tides for the section you choose.

Route options

Compare all 11 access-pair choices on this hub. Choose a section, then open its trip page for exact endpoints, access, distance, and hazard notes.

Difficulty

Androscoggin River routes here are marked moderate, so choose the stretch that fits your group and conditions.

Choose a section before planning the shuttle

The trail guide documents more than 50 access sites and presents distinct North Woods, Mahoosucs, and Greenway–Riverlands sections with different river character and logistics. These 11 cards preserve endpoint choices; each card is a planning option, not an official trail itinerary.

Mahoosucs · Gilead through Rumford

The watershed council describes a relatively gentle run through Gilead, Bethel, and Hanover before Rumford’s falls and dams. It identifies a popular Gilead-to-Bethel paddle and says the Rumford falls require a significant portage, with a take-out above town. Any longer card that crosses this boundary needs a separate portage and relaunch plan; do not treat it as continuous paddling.

Mexico–Dixfield–Canton · low-water shallows

Downstream of Rumford, the trail passes Mexico and Dixfield, then turns north toward Canton. The council names Dixfield to Canton as a self-guided paddle and warns that low flows can hide shallow sand and gravel bars. The Mexico–Canton card uses its own listed endpoints; check its exact access and water conditions rather than assuming the Dixfield itinerary is identical.

Review the Mexico–Canton access option

Greenway–Riverlands · impoundment, wind, and tide

Farther south, Turner’s Gulf Island Pond is backed up by a dam and has little current, while valley winds can still be strong. Near Brunswick, the council describes a tidal paddle and says upstream travel is easier with the tide; tide and wind can change conditions quickly. Treat these as different plans, and use the specific card’s endpoints and access notes.

Maine DACF’s launch inventory verifies named public-access anchors, but it does not confirm current openings, parking, or every route mileage. Read the official Androscoggin River Trail section guide and its self-guided paddle descriptions, then confirm access through the Maine public boat-launch inventory. USGS 01054500 measures water near Rumford. Its reading does not establish suitable paddling levels for the whole river.
