Choose a stretch by river character

Drawn from The Last Green Valley’s 2016 Paddle Guide and its older 2013 route notes. Confirm current access and conditions before launching.

Connecticut Trail Finder and The Last Green Valley describe upper quickwater, the Eagleville Lake impoundment, and the lower river toward Willimantic. The 2016 guide documents a Route 66 take-out at river mile 21.4 and the Air Line Trail landing at river mile 22.5 as the last public landing, about 1.1 river miles farther downstream. Route 66 is an earlier exit; if continuing downstream, leave at Air Line Trail before the dangerous falls and current, where there is no public landing beyond.

Upper quickwater

The guide notes a weekend-only launch at the Route 32 commuter lot, an old low-head drop below it, and strainers along the upper reach.

Route 32 commuter lot to Nye-Holman

Heron Cove to Peck’s Mill

This short reach includes the guide’s Class II quickwater, boulders, Pulpit Rock, and the small-eddy landing at Peck’s Mill.

Heron Cove Park to Peck’s Mill

Eagleville Lake

River Park leads into the impoundment. Check wind on the open lake and stop at the documented access above the dam.

River Park to Eagleville Lake

Below Eagleville Dam

Portage around Eagleville Dam. The 2016 guide documents the Route 66 take-out at river mile 21.4 and Air Line Trail at river mile 22.5 as the last public landing. Leave the river at Air Line Trail before dangerous downstream falls and current.

Downstream portage route listing

Long Route 32 day trip

This 21.4-mile listing ends at the Route 66 take-out documented in the 2016 guide. Air Line Trail, 1.1 river miles farther downstream, is the last public landing before dangerous falls and current.

Compare the Connecticut Trail Finder water-trail page and map, The Last Green Valley’s Eagleville-to-Willimantic access note, its 2016 Paddle Guide (PDF), and the older 2013 guide (PDF). Check the linked USGS gauge, weather, waterway notices, and access status before every trip. Never run Eagleville Dam or paddle beyond the take-out designated by the trail manager.
