Woonasquatucket River
The named Georgiaville-to-Greystone paddle and two shorter Esmond choices remain available. Scout the carries and check current access and water-quality notices. Centerdale telemetry is context; these plans have no same-day score.

Woonasquatucket paddling zones and access gap
The 2012 Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council paddling guide describes separate upper, mill-pond and lower-river paddles. It reports no public pond access and four unestablished dam portages around Allendale and Lymans below Greystone. We have not confirmed a way through. Whipple and the lower-river trips are currently withheld while we check the landings and portages. The three upper trips in the chooser do not provide a continuous trip to Providence.
Upper river: Georgiaville to Greystone
The approximately 2.5-mile Georgiaville-to-Cricket reach is the documented upper paddle. Two shorter choices use Esmond’s park-portage access area, with estimated mileage and a required check of the dam-side landing and carry. Whipple choices remain under endpoint review.
- Georgiaville Town Beach to Esmond Park — Estimated 1.1 river miles
- Georgiaville Town Beach to Cricket Park / Greystone Mill Pond — Approximately 2.5 river miles
- Esmond Park to Cricket Park / Greystone Mill Pond — Estimated 1.6 river miles
Lower river: Manton to Providence
The older lower-river endpoint plans are under review for launch identity, dam-side access, carries and tidal logistics. They are not currently offered as verified trips. WRWC now also documents a Kinsley Avenue launch; use its current local guidance when planning downtown.
Before you go
Plan the upper Woonasquatucket before choosing a launch
The named upper trip includes dam carries
WRWC’s 2012 guide names an approximately 2.5-mile Georgiaville-to-Greystone trip. It requires carrying around the Georgiaville spillway and arranging passage at Esmond Dam before continuing to Cricket Park. Check town launch terms and inspect every carry before departure.
Match the observation to its section
The upper guide reports rock contact near 75 cfs and faster current near 200 cfs at USGS 01114500 at Centerdale. Its separate 50-cfs observation concerns Manton-to-Atwells. These historical descriptions do not establish a calibrated cutoff for an upper trip or for tidal downtown water.
Watch for on this river
- Current park and water-quality notices
- Spillway and dam carries, breached-dam rocks and strainers
- Rainfall and the Centerdale observation trend; no score cutoff
Check your selected plan for additional hazards and restrictions.
More about access, rules and safety
Esmond is a portage-area choice
The guide permits a shorter start or finish at Esmond. The stored pin marks a park-portage area, not an exact dam-side water entry. Shorter distances and times are estimates; arrange a suitable entry, exit and public carry before using either option.
Other launches need a corrected plan
Whipple, Manton, Riverside and downtown endpoint plans are under access review. Current WRWC trips use a new Kinsley Avenue launch; that does not validate our older endpoint combinations or establish a continuous upper-to-lower trip. Consult the operator for current local options.
Access
- Coordinates identify access areas, not surveyed water-entry edges or dam-side landing positions.
- Finish at the Cricket Park hand-carry launch on Greystone Mill Pond and stay clear of the dam at the southeast end of the pond. Confirm the landing and parking before launch.
- The named full upper paddle is approximately 2.5 miles in the 2012 guide. Shorter-option mileage and paddle times are estimates, not independently published measurements.
- The Town beach page and state health notices can differ in freshness. Confirm current local opening and advisory status before a Georgiaville launch.
- Start at Georgiaville Town Beach only after checking current town access terms and water-quality notices. The 2012 WRWC guide describes a landing and carry around the unrunnable Georgiaville spillway; inspect the entire carry before launching.
Safety
- Wear a PFD and carry communication, spare layers and an offline trip plan. Scout wood, rocks and every carry before launch.
- Do not run the Georgiaville spillway. Scout Esmond Dam and arrange a suitable public carry; a gauge reading does not clear either structure.
- The historical upper-river observations at 75 and 200 cfs do not define a safe range. Higher current gives less time to avoid strainers; lower water can require carrying.
- Check current water-quality advisories and avoid contact with sediment. Georgiaville boating access has town rules and pass or sticker requirements; confirm the terms before staging.
- Stay clear of the Greystone dam. This trip does not continue through the unverified Allendale/Lymans pond-portage corridor.
Rules: Confirm current Town of Smithfield beach, vehicle, boat and trailer pass or sticker requirements for a Georgiaville start. Use public park approaches at Esmond and Cricket and respect posted closures and private banks.
Camping: No overnight camping is included. Use established campgrounds or lodging and do not camp along the urban riverbank.

Providence paddle access
Separate the new Kinsley launch from the listed route endpoints
WRWC documented the launch in 2026; confirm tide, event closures, and current access before choosing a lower-river trip.
The Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council documents a Kinsley Avenue Boat Launch beside Farm Fresh Rhode Island and a 2026 downtown paddle on a rising tide. This is a current local access reference. It does not establish our older fixed launch and take-out pairs, their distances, or permission to land at Waterplace Park.
The former lower-river plans are withheld while their actual landings, dam carries, mileage and tidal logistics are corrected. A rental dock or a point passed on the water is not automatically a public launch or bailout.
See WRWC's 2026 Kinsley Avenue launch update and Greenway project completion notice. WRWC separately lists the Riverside Park canoe and kayak launch. Confirm exact water entry, take-out, tide, and posted closures before departure.
Quick answers
Woonasquatucket River paddling FAQ
Where can I paddle the Woonasquatucket River?
Use the named Georgiaville-to-Greystone paddle or a shorter Esmond planning option. Whipple and lower-river plans need corrected access evidence; the intervening pond corridor also remains unverified. This guide does not establish a continuous trip to Providence.
How should I check Woonasquatucket River water levels?
These planning routes have no live conditions score. Use each route’s gauge notes and source guidance, then check current waterway notices, weather, access, and local conditions before launching.
How should I choose a Woonasquatucket River trip?
Compare distance, difficulty, launch access, and shuttle needs. These routes are planning references; verify current conditions with the linked sources before choosing a trip.
