- Lake O' the Pines releases control the reach and can change flow quickly. Check same-day USGS discharge/gage height and any USACE release information immediately before launching.
- The reach has riffles, pools, backwaters, variable depths, and common large woody debris. Scout hazards from shore where possible and do not assume the threshold clears strainers or release hazards.
- Keep to the navigable corridor and named public endpoints. Surrounding banks are private, and TPWD reports water-quality impairments and fish-consumption advisories in the lower Big Cypress/Caddo system.

- TPWD reports historical water-quality impairments and a fish-consumption advisory for portions of Big Cypress Bayou/Caddo Lake; do not drink untreated water and review current advisories.
