Safety details
USFWS warns that Blackwater navigation includes shallow water, submerged mudflats, meandering or unmarked channels, and tidal changes. The historical USGS Little Blackwater stage-only station is clearly labeled proxy context and has no current discharge threshold; use actual depth, tide, wind, and the official geospatial map.
- Watercraft may launch only at the Route 335 Blackwater soft launch, Key Wallace Little Blackwater launch, or the named public Shorters Wharf ramp as specified by USFWS. Do not exit onto marsh or use Wildlife Drive shoreline as an improvised landing.
- The refuge is open dawn to dusk, the Purple Trail is seasonally closed October 1–March 31, and refuge water access has seasonal closure/hunting controls. Wear a fitted PFD, carry communication/navigation gear, and check current refuge notices before launch.
- The Orange Trail includes Coles Creek and central brackish water; shallow mud, current, wind, and an unmarked channel can make the return slower than the outward leg.
- Shorters Wharf is a hard return boundary; avoid being caught on the marsh side after the tide or daylight turns.
