Safety details
The Maryland DNR guide warns that changing winds, currents, and tides can make the Corsica routes hazardous. The Yellow Bank headwaters can be mud flats at very low tide, and the Watson Road bridge may be impassable at extreme high tide; check a current tide table, wind forecast, daylight, and observed depth before committing.
- USGS 01491000 on the Choptank River near Greensboro is a clearly labeled watershed-context proxy, not a Corsica-local safe-depth or discharge threshold. Combine its trend with current tide, wind, recent rain, water clarity, and a visual check of the shallow channel.
- Wear a fitted PFD, carry a spare paddle and communication plan, and stay in the marked channels. Watch for fishing lines at the Watson Road bridge, fallen trees, debris, private banks, low marsh, and the long carry or shallow shoreline at named public access sites.
- Alder Branch requires a short open-water crossing toward Sycamore Point before the sheltered tributary. Do not launch in a marginal wind or thunderstorm forecast, and turn around before the shallow dogleg becomes a grounding or extraction problem.
