Distance, difficulty, rules and camping
DifficultyhardDifficulty follows the cited manager guide where stated and otherwise is deliberately conservative. Current flow, debris, diversions, weather, and party skill can materially change the trip.

CampingOptions nearbyPlan for self-support camping only at lawful, durable BLM or reservation-approved sites. Carry all water, food, waste, fire-pan, and weather contingency equipment; do not assume private ranch or reservation banks are available.
SeasonMar-JunLate spring through early fall is the normal planning window. Verify snowmelt, releases, fire or fish-protection closures, water temperature, weather, and access status immediately before travel.

  • Safety and land managementCurrent manager notices override this record

This is a remote, committing East Fork trip with willow tunnels, fences, changing channels, long flatwater, Class III-IV rapids, sieves, and limited walk-out options. Use experienced expedition paddlers with satellite communication, rescue/repair gear, redundant food/water, and a complete portage plan. Recent trip reports describe 1,000-2,000 cfs as the target Crutcher gauge range, about 1,100 cfs as well padded, and 700 cfs as a low edge for hard shells or canoes. The BLM guide says the East Fork should be near bank-full or higher on the reservation and that upper portages are likely below high water; local scouting overrides the numeric cue. The Duck Valley launch requires current reservation approval or confirmation from tribal officials. Garat and Rickard crossings have separate private-road/permission controls, while Crutcher is a remote high-clearance launch; verify the selected access and wet-road conditions before departure.
