Trip details

Access rules, camping, seasonal conditions and trip length.

Distance, difficulty, rules and camping
DifficultyhardRemote Class III–IV wilderness whitewater with technical rapids, high-consequence rescue, mandatory permits, and a long boat carry at the put-in. The lower Smith Fork-to-Gunnison Forks segment is easier but does not remove the upstream technical exposure.
PermitsCheck posted rulesBLM wilderness registration, user fees, and any required day-use or overnight permit apply. Groups are limited to 12; use designated river camps and follow current BLM carry-out, fire, and wildlife rules.
CampingOptions nearbyDesignated primitive river camps are available within the Gunnison Gorge Wilderness by permit/registration. Chukar Trailhead also has four designated campsites; Gunnison Forks is day-use only. Never camp on an unmarked bank or private shoreline.
SeasonMay-SepSnowmelt, reservoir operations, storms, cold water, road conditions, and wilderness access can change the usable window. Check direct discharge and trend plus BLM closures and same-day river observations.

Access caveats

  • The Chukar boat launch is reached from the Chukar Trailhead by a one-mile wilderness hike. Carry boats and all gear; carts and wheeled devices are prohibited.
  • Gunnison Forks offers public walk-in river access and a natural-surface ramp. Confirm current parking, fees, sanitation, river level, and shuttle arrangements before committing.
  • Private Gunnison River Pleasure Park access is separate from the BLM public take-out. Do not substitute it without current permission and a separate access review.

Watch for

  • USGS 09128000 rapid change, high-water hydraulics, or readings outside the conservative 600–2,000 cfs planning cues
  • Class III–IV Chukar, Red Canyon, Gate Keeper, and named gorge rapids
  • cold water, strainers, undercuts, canyon walls, and limited recovery
  • BLM closures, wilderness registration/fee requirements, group-size limits, and designated-camp rules
  • rough 4WD Chukar Road, one-mile carry, and missed Gunnison Forks take-out

Data and sources

Read the access and hazard notes and check the linked guides. We do not issue a daily score for this trip.

What to know before you go

These notes cover the access details, route quirks, and source caveats most likely to matter once you get there.

  • Named public corridorChukar Boat Launch to Gunnison Forks; approximately 13.5 miles; Class III–IV features with Class I–II lower gorge

BLM’s river map names the only wilderness boater put-in, the Gunnison Forks public take-out, river-mile sequence, rapid classes, and the lower easy-float section.

    Source

  • Direct telemetry and flow postureUSGS 09128000; BLM feature cues below 600 cfs and above 2,000 cfs; planning-only

USGS provides direct telemetry. BLM notes that Gate Keeper changes below 600 cfs and holes become large above 2,000 cfs; these cues are not a station-tied runnable envelope, so the route is excluded from scoring.

    Source

  • Water access coordinatesChukar launch 38.62281, -107.8318; Gunnison Forks 38.78475, -107.83655

The Chukar river-launch anchor is mapped at the named rapid/boat launch; Recreation.gov separately documents the public trailhead and one-mile carry. BLM publishes the Gunnison Forks access-area coordinate and ramp description.

    Source

  • Camping and permit postureDesignated wilderness river camps by registration; Chukar trailhead camps; Gunnison Forks day-use only

BLM and Recreation.gov document designated camps, user fees, registration, group limits, and carry-out requirements. No informal bank camping is implied.

    Source

  • High-class rapid handlingExpert-only Class III–IV; mandatory scout/portage and rescue-readiness language

The route explicitly preserves Chukar, Red Canyon, Gate Keeper, and other BLM-named rapid hazards. A listing does not imply that any rapid is runnable for a given crew or flow.

    Source

  • Duplicate separationDistinct Gunnison Gorge wilderness reach, separate from the existing Gunnison town routes

This route uses 09128000, Chukar/Gunnison Forks endpoints, BLM wilderness permits, and gorge rapid classes; it does not overlap the 09114500 Almont-to-North Bridge or 09114500 Whitewater Park route records.
