Hoosic RiverSchaghticoke Powerhouse to Hudson River Lock 4 State Canal Park
A five-mile lower Hoosic River moving-water route from the Schaghticoke powerhouse to the public Lock 4 State Canal Park at the Hudson confluence. Safety details
American Whitewater rates this reach Class I–II, but its warning that extreme or flood flows change the difficulty still applies. Wear a fitted PFD, carry a float plan, and visually inspect the channel before committing.
- The Powerhouse Road entry is narrow, partly unpaved, crosses a one-lane low-weight bridge, and has very limited parking. Leave the downstream vehicle at Lock 4 and confirm current Brookfield access instructions before driving in.
- Treat the powerhouse discharge and any changing current as a live hazard. Do not approach the power plant structures, enter the Schaghticoke bypass/gorge above the powerhouse, or rely on the lower-run card as permission for the expert gorge.
- At the Hudson confluence, take out at Lock 4 State Park. Do not continue into the Champlain Canal, Lock C4, or the Hudson without a separate navigation plan, current hours, and a suitable take-out; avoid private banks and steep unmarked landings.

Take-out
Lock 4 State Canal Park / Hoosic-Hudson confluenceLock 4 State Park is seasonal and the park gate may close before the group reaches the take-out. Access caveats
- The powerhouse access is supported by the Brookfield/American Whitewater recreational access agreement and the Hoosic River Watershed Association directions, but the road, gate, limited parking, and sign-in procedure require current confirmation before every trip.
- Lock 4 State Park is seasonal and the park gate may close before the group reaches the take-out. Confirm current operating hours, parking, river-path access, and the short uphill carry; use no private or steep roadside substitute without authorization.
- The stored endpoint is the Lock 4 park/confluence access anchor. It is not permission to paddle through the canal lock or continue on the Hudson; those are separate navigation decisions.
Watch for
- USGS 01334500 proxy trend, local rainfall, powerhouse discharge, rising water, or a gauge reading inconsistent with the visual current
- shallow gravel, fast riffles, strainers, cold water, high banks, private shoreline, and power-facility structures
- Powerhouse Road gate/sign-in, one-lane bridge, limited parking, Lock 4 park hours, take-out path/carry, canal traffic, and downstream boundary confusion

NotesWhat to know before you go
These notes cover the access details, route quirks, and source caveats most likely to matter once you get there.
- Named New York corridorPowerhouse to Hudson / Lock 4; 5 miles; Class I–II
American Whitewater publishes the matching lower Hoosic reach, mileage, class, endpoint names, and the downstream Lock 4 boundary.
- Public powerhouse accessSigned Schaghticoke Powerhouse entry with limited parking and recreational access agreement
American Whitewater documents restored boater access through the Brookfield agreement, while the Hoosic River Watershed Association supplies the signed Powerhouse Road directions and small parking area.
- Public Lock 4 take-outLock 4 State Canal Park at the Hoosic-Hudson confluence
The Hoosic River Watershed Association documents the river path, short carry, seasonal gate, and park access; the Canalway listing corroborates the Lock C4 cartop-launch location.
- Proxy flow guidanceLive USGS 01334500 Eagle Bridge trend plus local rainfall, powerhouse discharge, and visual inspection; no numeric route threshold claimed
USGS provides current discharge and stage for the upstream station. American Whitewater and the watershed guide emphasize changing flow, low-water navigation, and local observation for this lower reach.
- Endpoint camping contextLock C4 designated canal camping when confirmed open
The New York Canal Corporation says camping is limited to designated lock locations; Lock C4 appears in the Canalway camping network as a biker-hiker-boater site. Confirm availability directly and do not infer shoreline camping rights.
- Same-river proxy gaugeUSGS 01334500, Hoosic River near Eagle Bridge, NY
USGS 01334500 is a live station near Eagle Bridge upstream of the route. Treat it as same-river proxy context: the Hoosic drains quickly, local tributaries and rainfall change the lower reach, and powerhouse operations can decouple the local current from the upstream reading.
- Safety and river conditionsCheck live gauge, recent rainfall, trend, debris, bridges, and access conditions before launch
American Whitewater / Hoosic River Watershed Association / Brookfield access agreement and its linked safety material warn that conditions change rapidly and require local inspection.
- Image decisionApproved watershed/proxy-gauge context image used for route presentation
The image is clearly labeled as watershed/proxy-gauge context and does not claim to depict this exact reach.
