  North Idaho Rivers documents a river-wide Jam Dam and additional wood, narrow Class III-IV ledges, long swims, few eddies, and difficult portages. Scout from the river trail where possible, carry saw/rescue gear, and do not treat the named campgrounds as a guarantee of a clear channel. Use 2.5 ft as the conservative lower stage, 3-3.5 ft as the preferred Red Ives band, and 4 ft as the upper planning shoulder. The gauge is two miles below Spruce Tree but on the same reach; stage trend, wood, and actual channel conditions override every numeric cue. Heller Camp is reached by rough Forest Road 320 from Red Ives or Montana, and the road can remain snowbound until late June. The river trail climbs away from the channel and is not a reliable emergency exit; carry satellite communication, first aid, cold-water protection, and a conservative turnaround plan.
