Safety details
This is a Class III–IV whitewater route for advanced paddlers with a capable team, suitable whitewater craft, fitted PFDs, helmets, rescue equipment and cold-water protection; do not use the score or gauge as a go/no-go guarantee.
- Scout Floriston Gorge, Jaws, Bronco, Headhunter/Fleish Dam, Dead Man’s Curve, Steamboat Canal and Verdi Diversion before committing; portage as signed and stay away from intakes and dam hydraulics.
- The official guide describes dry or under-watered reaches between diversion dams and powerhouse returns; changing releases can strand boats or expose structures. Confirm route-wide water continuity and current operations, not only one gauge.
- High spring flows increase force and reduce bridge clearance at Headhunter; rebar, concrete, trees, strainers, sharp metal and foot entrapment make swims especially dangerous.
- Respect private property, railroad and highway corridors, posted closures and the state boundary. Use the Floriston off-ramp launch and Crystal Peak Park water-entry edge only; leave a full day and an emergency plan.

- Named reach and accessFloriston I-80 bridge launch to Crystal Peak Park; 9.9 miles
Nevada Trail Finder’s route description names the Floriston I-80 bridge/off-ramp put-in and Crystal Peak Park take-out. The official point KML identifies both access markers, and the route KML follows the channel between them.
- Scored navigability floor700 cfs minimum-only
Nevada Trail Finder says the best flows for this named route are over 700 cfs. Use 700 cfs as a minimum-only score preference; it is not a safe-to-run threshold. The same source warns that diversions can dewater sections, so check the Farad, Mogul and Boca gauges, current release notices and local on-river observations.
- Direct gaugeUSGS 10346000 Truckee River at Farad, CA
Direct Truckee River discharge telemetry for this corridor; the gauge is upstream of the route and cannot capture every intervening diversion or power-return condition.
