Launch at Big Spring Campground / Access #47 and take out at Elkader Access #39A for the official lower pre-dam Turkey River water-trail leg. This is the shorter, more reliable half of the Elgin-to-Elkader corridor because Big Spring adds coldwater flow before the river bends into Elkader.

- Elkader Access #39A is upstream of the Elkader dam. Watch for water-trail signs, land on river left, and do not continue toward the dam unless you are intentionally portaging around it.
- The Elkader landing can be a skinny sand-and-mud path rather than a developed ramp, so carrying boats up the bank may be awkward at low or high water.

- Scrapey riffles and gravel bars near and below 220 cfs on the Elkader gauge.
- Abandoned car debris, wood piles, and strainers along outside bends.
- Wind through the wider valley, shallow side channels, and the current slowing as the Elkader dam pool begins.
- Mandatory take-out / portage behavior at Elkader; never pass posted dam warnings.
