  American Whitewater rates the reach Class III-IV with a standout Class V feature at Sheep Falls. The main Sheep Falls line is Class V+; use the right-side Class IV+ channel only after a careful scout, or portage on the established right-bank trail. Most locals reportedly wait for more than 1,500 cfs on the direct Fall River near Squirrel gauge. Treat that as a community flow floor, not a guarantee: higher water increases the consequences at the bedrock ledge, Sheep Falls, diversion dams, and wood. Cave Falls itself is upstream in Yellowstone National Park and is not a paddling objective. Launch only at the named campground, obey current Forest Service/NPS boundary rules, and carry bear-safe food storage in grizzly habitat. The route contains multiple diversion structures and a mandatory downstream exit at the Concrete CCC Bridge. Confirm the bridge landing, road access, and current wood before committing; do not continue into the separate lower Fall River reach without a new plan.
