Use a proven Class IV crew, helmets, rescue equipment, and a craft suited to technical basalt rapids. Wood can make the reach a full grade harder at high flows, and the canyon has long isolated sections with limited exits. Scout from the rim/road where possible, portage early, and carry satellite communication and an emergency overnight kit. Use 1,200-4,000 cfs only as the American Whitewater/Teton gauge correlation.
