    American Whitewater rates the reach Class III-IV and notes that it becomes the Middle Fork after the Bear Valley confluence. Expect cold water, changing wood, narrow channels, and remote rescue; scout from legal road or Forest Service access and carry satellite communication. Use the direct Middle Fork Lodge gauge only with the RiverBrain 1,000 cfs minimum, 3,500-5,500 cfs planning ideal, and 12,000 cfs upper shoulder. The gauge is downstream of the early Marsh Creek section, so local snowmelt, wood, weather, and access conditions override any numeric cue. This card ends at the Boundary Creek launch corridor. American Whitewater says downstream Middle Fork travel requires the Forest Service permit; do not continue through the controlled wilderness corridor without a current permit, camp assignment, and downstream plan.
