  • Defensible proxy gaugeUSGS 12414500 - St. Joe River at Calder, ID (downstream context)

Gauge is downstream on the same river system and must not be treated as a local measurement.

  • Threshold postureNumeric cue retained for planning

The route remains planning-only; no live go/no-go score is asserted.

    Source

  • Safety and land managementCurrent manager notices override this record

The first two miles are relatively flat, then the obvious horizon line marks Skookum Canyon. American Whitewater describes the main drops as Class III and the action continuing for roughly a mile; scout from Highway 50 and carry a rescue plan. At low flows the reach becomes closer to Class II, but that does not remove wood, cold-water, or entrapment hazards. Do not enter the canyon without an experienced whitewater group and a verified take-out plan. Use 500-1,500 cfs as a conservative planning band from the local Panhandle flow table. The Calder gauge is downstream context rather than a surveyed reach gauge, so local trend, visual level, wood, and road conditions override the numeric cue.
