Launch from the Gilbertson Park / Elgin access corridor and take out at Big Spring Campground for the long upper-middle Turkey River day well upstream of Elkader. This is the cleaner all-day public route for paddlers who want a longer Driftless float without finishing in town.

- The practical Elgin launch is the Highway B64 bridge corridor by Gilbertson Park rather than a polished ramp. Walk the bank before unloading if you have not used the access before.
- Big Spring Campground is the official Water Trail Access #47 take-out. Frieden Park is another official access about a half mile farther downstream, but use it only if you intentionally want the extra mileage and rougher finish.
- Bridge or gravel-bar pauses do not guarantee legal long stops on private banks. Keep breaks to public access points or obvious riverbed areas below the high-water line when conditions allow.
Watch for
- Long shallow riffles and gravel bars when the Elkader proxy gauge falls toward the 250 cfs floor.
- Outside-bend wood, farm-fence remnants, and shifting channels after storms in the broad valley above Big Spring.
- Headwinds, hot exposed sections, and limited easy bail-out points once you leave the Gilbertson / Narrows access area.
