Use a proven expedition crew, satellite communication, repair/rescue gear, and a conservative portage plan. The 3-foot Middle Fork Lodge stage is a local planning cue for the connected Big Creek/Middle Fork trip, not a direct Big Creek gauge or safety guarantee. A 2026 trip report at 5 feet described upper Big Creek as wood-choked and effectively Class V; inspect the trend, current wood, and party capability before launch. A free Middle Fork permit is required for Big Creek paddling and the connected Middle Fork segment; the corridor is closed to canoe/kayak use in April, May, August, and September for spawning protection. Confirm the current permit, flight/airstrip status, road or air access, wildfire closures, and Cache Bar ramp before committing.
