  American Whitewater rates the reach Class IV-V and describes Devil Creek, Surprise, Elk Creek, Fall Creek, and other consequential features. This is an expert expedition requiring a proven crew, rescue systems, cold-water protection, satellite communication, and evacuation planning. Trip reports describe 3.2-3.4 ft as a good level for a mixed kayak/packraft group, while a 1.65 ft report required repeated scraping and portages and called 2 ft a personal practical floor. Treat these as community stage cues, not a guarantee for every rapid. The standard Vinegar Creek take-out requires a further 20-mile paddle on the Main Salmon unless a flight or Carey Creek exit is arranged. Confirm permit tags, downstream take-out logistics, and the Main Salmon permit boundary before launch.
