Safety details
The NPS guide says the Jug Bridge gauge should read at least 1.7 ft for Devilbiss and below, while 5 ft or higher is hazardous for recreational use. Treat the minimum as a planning screen, not a guarantee.
- Wear a fitted PFD and use a boat suited to shallow rocky water. Cold water, changing current, strainers, slippery banks, and recent rain override a favorable gauge reading.
- Stay within the named public launch and take-out corridors. Do not use private banks, farm lanes, or informal roadside pull-offs for scouting, landing, or emergencies without permission.
- The lower route approaches the Potomac confluence. Take out at the named Monocacy Boat Ramp; do not continue into the Potomac, toward dams, or into unfamiliar current without a separate route and hazard review.
