  American Whitewater describes Smith Creek as nearly continuous Class IV/V- with a roughly 1,700-foot plunge, little easy water, and long read-and-run sections. This is for an expert creek team with rescue systems, helmet/PFD discipline, and a conservative turn-around plan. The first section includes a documented unrunnable 20-foot falls/portage and difficult scouting; the final half-mile contains Upper Falls, Smith Falls, and a 40-foot falls into a cauldron. Treat the mapped endpoint as a mandatory take-out above Smith Falls and do not continue downstream.
