Safety details
The Blueway rates Great Road to Fieldale at approximately 3.3 miles with Class I–II rapids. Wear a fitted PFD, stay within moving-water skills, and scout rocks, bridge current, wood, and industrial structures.
- Philpott releases can change conditions quickly. Check USGS 02072500, the generation hotline, weather, debris, and the actual Great Road launch before committing.
- Fieldale is the named downstream access before the Doe Run boundary and the Martinsville dam. Exit at Fieldale unless a separate current plan verifies the next section and dam logistics.
- Use only Great Road and Fieldale public accesses and respect industrial, residential, and private banks. Cancel for cold water, storms, poor visibility, failed shuttle, or unsafe access.

Access caveats
- The Blueway identifies Great Road and Fieldale as public access points; confirm current parking, carry, ramp condition, and wetted-edge entry/exit before relying on either endpoint.
- The 65–1,400 cfs value is release context, not a safety limit. Compare telemetry, generation timing, and the water-level visual before launch.
- Fieldale is the last access before the Doe Run and Martinsville dam boundary for this route. Do not continue beyond it without a separate verified plan.
Watch for
- USGS 02072500 unavailable, rapidly rising, or inconsistent with the Great Road visual; also confirm the Philpott generation hotline
- Class I–II rapids, rocks, strainers, bridge current, industrial structures, cold water, storms, and floating debris
- closed or full access, slippery carry, private banks, missed Fieldale take-out, or the Martinsville dam boundary
