  American Whitewater rates the run Class IV-V and calls out the Class V Double Drop. This is an expert-only reach with a proven crew, rescue kit, throw bags, cold-water protection, and satellite communication; swim consequences and rescue access are serious. The Goat Creek access is a small pullout and scramble below a road culvert, while Poverty Flat is a narrow one-lane Forest Service campground road. Inspect the launch and take-out on foot, keep the campground landing clear, and do not assume a roadside carry is a public ramp. The South Fork Salmon is closed to paddling in April, May, August, and September for spawning according to the American Whitewater reach record. Plan this run for the open June-July window only after checking current Payette National Forest and IDFG notices. Use the Krassel stage as a reach-level planning cue: about 3-4 ft is the published South Fork band, below 3 ft is technical, above 4 ft becomes exponentially harder, and above 5 ft is treacherous. Local wood, trend, weather, and scout reports override the number.
